The Office of Child Development Book Drive is our chance to directly impact children in Pittsburgh and the surrounding regions. Last year, in reponse to the Tree of Life tragedy, we delivered 3,000 books across the region to help children process fear and embrace diversity. This year, we're focused on Books for Change, promoting equity through picture books.
At first, equity might seem like a topic of conversation for older children. Maybe it would be appropriate for pre-teens or high schoolers, but little ones? How are we supposed to talk about things like race, social justice, mental wellness, and economic inequality with our babies?
For us, the answer lies in picture books.
Picture books are powerful. They contain beautiful, profound messages distilled into digestible chunks with captivating imagery. They transport you to a different world, and in the cases of the books on this year's list, a world where equity in its many forms is ever present. Flipping through the pages of Julián is a Mermaid centers gender with love and kindness. The Skin You Live In promotes positive messages with a rhythm that you may start rapping along too. (We definitely did!) And a title like We're All Wonders has the ability to make any child feel seen and special.
So how can you help?
For $750, you can sponsor an entire school of your choosing, or let us pick the school! If you'd rather focus on a single classroom, you can donate $150 to equip a whole class with Books for Change.
If you'd simply like to donate a different dollar amount, follow this link and every penny of your donation will go directly to buying books. Make sure to note that your donation is for the book drive!
Purchase books from this list, send them to the Office of Child Development, and we'll deliver them. It's that easy.
If you'd like to visit your local bookstore, White Whale Bookstore in Bloomfield or City Books in the North Side will be offering select titles that you can donate. We're always looking for more partners though! Interested parties should reach out to Adam Flango at email@example.com.
Collect funds at school, hold a drive at work, or create your own fundraiser! No matter how much you raise, you can donate it directly to the Book Drive by clicking this link.
We will use this money to directly purchase books to make sure all forms of equity are represented.
